Two-way traffic in avenida de Madrid
Implementation of two-way traffic in avenida de Madrid, between avenida Constitución and Don Emilio Durán Durán St and rearrangement of traffic in plaza San Isidro and implementation of a pedestrian crossing.
Since the end of last 2023 has been examining by the City Council, with the cooperation of concerned Neighbour Municipal Councils, a proposal to rearrange traffic in avenida de Madrid to prevent from traffic jams in Dr. Olóriz St, ease exit connection of Gran Vía residents to the motorway and reduce traffic in Nueva del Santísimo and Almona de San Juan de Dios streets.
Following a thorough review of neighbour proposals to this rearrangement and possible changes due to recent renovation works in Avda. Divina Pastora, has been resolved to execute this renovation on the first days os July 2025.
Objective of Project
Great part of vehicles coming from Cardenal Parrado towards the motorway (downwards from Campus de Cartuja) in peak hours go through Cardenal Parrado St - avda. de Pulianas - Pza. San Isidro - Ancha de Capuchinos St - Avda. Capitán Moreno - Pza. del Triunfo - Tinajilla St - Nueva del Santísimo St - San Juan de Dios St - Almona de San Juan de Dios St creating a great traffic congestion at the end of this itinerary because of its low capacity instead of alternative itinerary avda. Dr. Olóriz - avda. Constitución.
This itinerary is used from Tinajilla St by residents of Gran Vía de Colón as alternative to the exit through avda. de Constitución because it doesn´t have left turns to avda. Dr. Severo Ochoa.
After the implementation of Light Rail in the city, the capacity of avda. Dr. Olóriz has been reduced, increasing traffic jams in peak hours and therefore using itinerary previously described (Tinajilla-Nueva del Santísimo-Almona de S. Juan de Dios-Sta. Bárbara).
The objective of two-way implementation in avda. de Madrid between avda. Constitución and Don Emilio Durán Durán St is to offer an exit to the motorway through avda. Dr. Severo Ochoa, and also give alternatives to the exit of avda. Dr. Olóriz.
To complete this project will be also rearranged traffic in plaza San Isidro to facilitate the Access from the right side of the street in avda. de Madrid and optimise the use of bus stop located in the square, with the installation of a new traffic light on the exit of the underpass creating a new pedestrian crossing much in demand by neighbours.
To ease traffic in plaza de San Isidro will be prohibitted circulation on the side of the square on the extensión of Cristo de la Yedra St (between Ancha de Capuchinos St and avda. de Madrid) but allowed for residents of barrio de San Ildefonso only, removing parking places and relocating taxi stop to the end of Dr. Guirao Gea St.
Description of actuation
Works carried out for the implementation of two-way traffic in avda. de Madrid between avda. de la Constitución and Don Emilio Durán Durán St and rearrangement in plaza de San Isidro are mostly:
Changes in vertical and horizontal signalling:
- Load and Unload area will be lineal at the beginning of avda. de Madrid.
- Exit right lane of the underpass is reserved for public transport and also will be reserved on the exit of plaza de San Isidro to avda. de Madrid.
- New pedestrian crossing at the exit of underpass.
- Exit of vehicles through the side of plaza de San Isidro on the extension of Cristo de la Yedra St will be prohibitted and awolled just for barrio de San Ildefonso residents.
Changes in traffic light signalling:
- Rearrange of crossroad avda. de Constitución and avda. de Madrid to implementate two-way traffic in the first part of avda. Madrid.
- Creation of new pedestrian crossing with traffic lights at the exit of the underpass and rearrangement of traffic to help public transport service and improve traffic on the right side of avda. de Madrid.
Execution period and Economic Valuation of this project
It is due that works will be developed on July and August 2025, so affections to traffic will be as less as possible.
This Project requires aproximately investmentment of 26.000 euros. We have to add the adaptation of the extensión of Cristo de la Yedra St (Plaza San Isidro) if unique platform is being implemented.
