The City Council of Granada promotes the use of cycles with educational workshops and a web: www.granadaciclocivica.es.
Granada ciclo cívica is the name of the new project encouraged by the City Council of Granada to promote displacements on bike as a susbtainable mean of transport, an initiative created in cooperation with associations of this area, incluiding practice and educational measures , information and mass media.
The Council of Mobility and Citizens Protection, Telesfora Ruiz, has explained that this project has two goals: encourage displacements on bike as a regular mean of transport, beating prejudices; and make aware of the necessity of a civilised use of bike, respectible and respectful with the pedestrians, the most vulnerable users of the public space.
To achieve it, it has been design a full programme based on three main foundations: education, information and mass media.
This first section includes 20 free educational workshops to ease traffic in the city in a secure and assertive way. "The idea is to make these workshops continuosly in time to get to a lot of people".
These courses ,teached by instructors of the Sports Faculty, are based on the Bikeability method, a new concept of Road Safety born in the United Kingdom, and it aim is to adquire the necessary knoledgement, so urban cyclist could drive safe and respectfully in any traffic situation, reducing risk situations for health and trouble with other users ofthis public space. Telesfora has remarked that "it is also an opportunity to feel the advantages of ride a bike on the city, with friends and qualified instructors".
The workshops are focused in a 5-15 people group, with two instructors each, and includes three workshops of two hours each; 2 hours of theorial learning and discussion, in the Sports Faculty; 2 hours to practice in a closed urban tour, or in Fuentenueva universitary Campus,or in Paseo del Salón; and 2 hours in an open route through the city, following the group guidelines.
The instructors are teachers and students of master and laste year in the UGR Sports Faculty, specialised in active mobility, while the audience could be high schools, Particulars, families, group of friends, companies, associations and any other group.
Students are teached in school hours, in the week. In this first edition joins the programme high schools Juan XXIII and A Ángel Ganivet. The rest of the audience would be teached on friday and saturday, from 25 april, to the end of may.
The campaign has implemented a web granadaciclocivica.es . This platform, structured in five parts (Esta plataforma, que está estructurada en 5 partes (bulletin board, nets, stories, mediateca and advices), "its goal is to become a meeting and information point of people travelling or intending to travel on bike in Granada. Is based in web 2,0, to promote involvement and interactuation between users". So, every single part will have a permanent section and an active one, so people, through standard forms, to interact and share information.
The Bulletin Board tab has news, events, activities like walks, meetings... every single person could share news or activities.
In Nets section, user could find bussinesses and collectives related with bikes (sales, delivery, tourism, training...)
There is also Mediateca, with access to the normative, books, videos and other proposals.
It also has a section called Stories, to get to real stories of people who use the bike in the city, and so create empathy and lead an example.
The last tab, the advice one, allows the user to know how to circulate safety and respectfully; and the Cyclist Map offers a clasification of the streets in according to speed (fast net or slow net in case of comercial or residential), and has the location of the bicycle parking zone, equipment,30 Zone, green areas and drinking fountains. This map will be shared out in several hot spots like high schools, hospitals, public administrarive centers...
The third of the foundaments of Granada Ciclo Cívica s the mass media. To that effect, it has been created a poster campaign in public spaces destinated to real people of Granada who habitually use the bike in the city, with different profiles (age, sex, job, address...) and motivations.
"Its about giving relevance to those who contribute in a substainable mobility in their habitual actions, highlighting its example and reinforcing empathy with the pedestrian".
For the mupis there have been chosen 7 real cyclists, with a very different social profile, each one photographed in some place of their usual itinerary, with their own bike and equipment. The stories of these cyclists can be followed on the web, togheter with other stories updated by different people. All togheter, they add up to 35 mupis distributed along the city, with 7 different urban cyclists, so this will give a lot of dynamism and diversity. The slogan drive respectfully, we are all pedestrians, spoken by real cyclists, exude and encourage empathy between cyclists and pedestrians.
Also, to be shown on the back side of the buses it has been designed and ilustrated composition with the same advices on the back of the map, that it is also shown in detail on the web, with the slogan visible and foreseeable. The characters who give this advices or normatives to circulate safe and respectfully with pedestrians are illustrations of these very same real people featuring as mupis, using illustrations to transmit friendship, closeness and educational messages.
There have been made also different prizes (badges, t-shirts, and stickers) with the anagram of the campaign, and the web granadaciclocivica.es. The T-shirts are destinated to the students of workshops and the bigger stickers to the shops that wants to express their friendship of bicycles and their civilised use.
